Many Master Photographers are award winners. The MPA holds both regional and national photography awards in a number of categories, including weddings. Introducing wedding photography in County Durham

For those who are thinking of getting married in 2009 and 2010 in the County Durham area, there are currently 13 qualified Master Photographers to choose from.

The benefits of choosing a Master Photographer for your wedding are many. Most couples are amazed at how quickly their wedding day seems to go, that's why it's vital that you choose your wedding photographer carefully, as the images they capture will provide a lasting reminder of your special day.

You may be tempted to ask a friend or family member to take your official pictures. We would urge to you to resist this temptation at all costs! People may be very competent amateur photographers, but very few can achieve the really 'polished' look of a well-taken professional photograph. Photographing a wedding properly can be a stressful business - and your guests are there to celebrate your wedding with you, not work!

It's worth remembering that if you are not happy with your wedding photographs it will be hard to recreate them. That's why it's so important that you find the right photographer for you, and that takes some research on your part.

The internet has made browsing photographer's work very easy. There's a directory of accredited Master Photographers Association members available at www.thempa.com where you may compare the styles on offer. You may be looking for traditional, formal images or the more contemporary 'reportage' style. Either way, www.thempa.com is the place to start looking.

Arrange appointments with a number of photographers and ask to see examples of their work. One sign of a skilled photographer is consistently good photos from one wedding, so make sure their portfolios aren't full of single shots from different weddings. This is particularly important if you're going for informal shots; it's relatively easy to get a couple of good natural pictures, but can they keep up that standard for a full album?

You may be considering a part-time (semi-professional) wedding photographer. This will be a cheaper option than a full-time professional, but they will probably not have the experience or support network that comes with a full-time photographer. They may not have undergone any training and they may flounder when it comes to demanding conditions, such as harsh sunlight, high winds, rain, dark skies, shooting into the sunlight, etc.

Using a full time Master Photographer is well worth the investment. Professionals also come in different levels of competence, but what is really important is that you a) like the pictures and b) get on well with the photographer who will be shooting your pictures on the day.
